English Celebrate Mother's Day With Great Enthusiasm and Thrill

The English celebrate Mother's Day with great enthusiasm and thrill. The English celebrate Mother's Day on the fourth Sunday of the month of Lent. Since the Lent days vary every year, the date of Mother's Day also varies accordingly.

The history of mother's day in UK can be traced back to 17th century. 'Mothering Sunday' was the primitive form and name of this event. In those times poor people would send their children as full time servants or apprentice with the rich. These children were given a day of in a year to go to their homes and spend some time with their families. The time period for this entertainment was fixed ---middle Sunday of the fasting period of the Lent (the fasting period would last from Ash Wednesday to Easter). Keeping this tradition in account, the Day was called 'Refreshment Sunday' or 'Mid-Lent Sunday'.

The day dedicated for Mothers in England was called Mothering Sunday. On this day, children would visit Mother Church (the Church of their home), instead of the daughter Church; the closest Church to their work place. After offering prayer, children would meet their mothers with flowers gathered from the bushes in their way back. Girls would bake special 'Simnel Cakes' for their mothers.

With the advent of Industrial Revolution, the working conditions changed throughout England and the Mothering Sunday celebration died away. Modern celebration of Mother's day in England is a copied version of the USA Mother's Day. The day is celebrated on the Mothering Day date but with a new concept and zeal.

On Mother's Day, sons and daughters, throughout UK present mother day flowers to their mothers. Here again, they follow US tradition and consider carnation as mother day flower. However, roses and chrysanthemums are also used as flowers for mother's day. These mother day flowers are arranged in to special mother's day flower arrangements. Flower industry of UK makes record sales on Mother's Day. Florists compete with each other to provide quality and cheap mother's day flowers to their customers.

Mother's day in England is celebrated on the last Sunday of the month of the Lent. The United Kingdom was the first empire in the world to dedicate a national holiday to mothers. The poor would send their children as domestic servants to the rich in far off regions. These children were given a few days off to meet their family. They would visit their mother church and present flowers to their mothers on the Mothering Sunday. The Industrial revolution of England changed the working conditions and these traditions got buried under rapid progress of the empire.
